Frequently Asked Questions about the Vizsla Bird Dog

vizsla bird dog

The Vizsla bird dog is a widely loved and highly respected breed, but even prospective owners don't know as much about the dog as they should. In this post, we'll address some of the most commonly asked questions people have about the Vizsla.

One thing potential owners usually want to know is where to buy their Vizsla puppy. The primary options are a breeder or a pet store. In the majority of cases, no respectable breeder would ever sell his/her dogs to a pet store because of the conditions to which they subject their animals.

Instead, buy from a breeder that other Vizsla owners have recommended. Most owners also want to know whether a male or female Vizsla would be better for their lifestyles.

The answer to that question is largely a matter of personal preference. In general, male dogs tend to be more aggressive and bolder than female dogs, and female dogs tend to be more submissive and moodier than their male counterparts.

Vizsla Cancer Risk

vizsla cancer

You may have heard about the Vizsla cancer issue, which is one of the most frequent health problems of the breed. The level of risk for your dog will depend on his/her particular bloodline.

It is true that certain Vizsla bloodlines are at a heightened risk for lymphosarcoma, also known as lymphoma. Lymphoma is a malignant type of cancer that affects the lymphoid system.

The lymphoid system is important to the health of Vizsla dogs because it is integral to the immune system. Lymphoma reduces the dog's ability to fight off infections.

The best way to gauge your Vizsla's risk for lymphoma is to find a good, honest breeder who discloses all past problems in the bloodline. If a history of cancer is present, it's probably safe that your animal might develop the disease as well, although lifestyle also plays an important role.

Save a Life by Adopting Vizsla Rescue Dogs

vizsla rescue dogs

With many breeds, owners rush into the decision to buy a puppy without first understanding the characteristics of the dog. They end up with a dog that is too big, too energetic, or too demanding for their tastes.

Vizsla dogs are no exception, which is why rescue organizations around the country offer Vizsla rescue dogs to good homes. Rescue dogs have been given up by their original owners, either directly to the rescue group or to a shelter.

Rescue organizations temporarily foster the displaced Vizslas until they can find a suitable home for them. Rescue groups for Vizslas tend to be very discriminating about the owners they pick because the dogs have already been uprooted once.

Potential adoptees must fill out extensive paperwork and complete an interview with the group and the dog. In many cases, a home visit is also required to make sure the Vizsla will have adequate space and will get along with all members of the family.

Hunting Vizslas in Action

Fundamentally, Vizslas are hunting dogs that were originally bred to find game on the terrain of Hungary. The Vizsla basically combines the best qualities of a retriever and a pointer.

Vizsla dogs have excellent senses of smell and can help their masters find their prey. As you can see in the video, when the dog finds something, it will point with its paw.

Most hunting owners use their Vizsla dogs to track birds. However, the Vizsla is very versatile and can apply its hunting instincts to almost any kind of game.

Two of the most valued hunting traits of the Vizsla are its speed and its caution. The dog is capable of running very quickly, but it will not rush prematurely at the game like other breeds.
