Watch Informative Video of Vizsla Dogs

vizsla dogs

For an information-packed video on Vizsla dogs, visit the Animal Planet Dog 101 video site at Animal.discovery.com/videos/dogs-101-vizsla.html. Discovery has created a four-minute video providing valuable facts about the breed.

One of the first things you'll learn is that Vizslas are remarkably clean dogs. In fact, they are the only breed that is odor-free.

Vizslas do not have the "dog" scent that other breeds do. The video also talks about the Vizsla's rich history as a royal dog.

Despite the Vizsla's calm and statuesque exterior, though, the breed is still surprisingly full of pep. They are great hunting dogs and wonderful, energetic companions.

What You Didn't Know About Vizsla Dogs.

vizsla dogs
Originating in Hungary, vizsla means "pointer" in Hungarian, vizsla dogs are the smallest of the pointer-retriever breeds. These dogs are energetic and athletic but light in build. They are skinny dogs with defined muscles and share physical characteristics with the other pointer-retrievers.

The Vizsla are natural hunters gifted with sensitive nose and are easily trained. These energetic, smart and sensitive dogs love attention and exercise and are protective. They quickly form close bonds with adults and children. With their tremendous loyalty and affection, they will cry or whine when they feel forgotten; giving them the nickname "velcro" dogs.

Without daily exercise, they may have too much energy and get very excited over young kids, thus being an excellent match for kids with a lot of energy. They do well with other pets, though their hunting instincts shows that they shouldn't be left alone with smaller pets such as hamsters, rabbits and guinea pigs.

Vizsla dogs require gentle, rewarding training as it does not respond well to harsh commands and strong physical discipline. They like to please, but their excitement and energy can sometimes be a bad thing. Like other hunting/sporting dogs, Vizslas require a good deal of daily physical and mental stimulation to be happy and healthy. Without stimulation they can become destructive, neurotic and depressed.

With the absence of an undercoat they get cold easy. Vizsla dogs should not be kept outdoors. Because they are "self-cleaning" dogs they don't require a frequent bath.
They are considered to be a well rounded dog, but can be prone to hip problems as well as having skin and food allergies.

Vizsla dogs were the favorite hunting dogs of the Magyar tribes who were living in the Carpathian basin in the 10th Century. Stone etchings over 1000 years old show a hunter with his falcon and a Vizsla. The breed almost ceased to exist after World War II when the Russians took control of Hungary. In an attempt to save them, native Hungarians smuggled some of the dogs to America and Austria where they quickly became one of the favorite family pets. The vizsla dogs became the 115th breed to be recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club) on November 25, 1960.

Vizsla_dogs

The Summer Classic Dog Shows features show dogs from all over the country at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.

The large venue has been well suited in previous years for the dog shows, as they've attracted in some of the highest attendances in the country.

The shows kicked off on June 26 and ran through the 29th.

Linda Durham of Arcadia, OK is the owner of a Vizsla named Konnor. Konnor won Best in Show at the event last year. Now a year older, Konnor is ranked first in the vizsla dogs breed and regularly competes in shows across the nation.

Compare Vizsla Dogs To German Short Haired Pointers

vizsla dogsRecently, someone posted online a question comparing Vizsla dogs to German short haired pointers. They wanted a hunting dog but also one that was a good family dog.

The response was that German short haired pointers are very excellent hunting dogs and that they would probably rather hunt than almost anything else, including eating. But overall the Vizsla's, who are excellent hunters as well, are the best family dog to have. They grow quite attatched to their owners and families and are very loving. Where the German short haired will sit at a window and look for anything that moves outside.

So if you want to get attached to your dog as well as have a great hunting partner, you might want to stick with the Vizsla's.

Will Vizsla Dogs Do Tricks?

The answer is of course a resounding, yes. The Internet is full of videos of Vizsla dogs doing everything from climbing up trees to rolling over and playing dead, sitting, jumping and like this great video shows...taking a running leap and diving into a lake. Of course that is the hunting nature of these great animals. Throw something in the water and they will fetch and retrieve dutifully (although I did not see anything being thrown in the water in this video.)

No other dog breed does it all quite like the Vizsla dog. What a well rounded personality you get when you have one of these as your family pet or your favorite hunting companion.

Now, will they cook you dinner and do your laundry? I've yet to see that but I wouldn't doubt it.

Vizsla Dogs Will Captivate You

Vizsla dogsVizsla dogs will captivate you. Just ask Rita Prindle of Wellington. She got her foster Vizsla dog from the Colorado/Wyoming Vizsla Rescue group. She admits he was gawky, awkward dog at first but she fell in love, brought him home and named him Jack.

"Just look in his eyes," Rita says, "They captivate you."

All the way back to 1989 Rita Prindle has taken in and rescued these lovable Vizsla dogs, which has kept them safe of shelters where the chance for abuse is high. Unfortunately she cannot rescue every single dog as some have been too badly abused and beaten to ever acclimate to a family again.

It is the love of the breed and animals in general that has kept her at it, and the fact that she keeps them safe from the animal shelters, but she admits she does not believe in taking them all.

"It is a really sad thing when you see people who are really hoarders. They'll just take in everything," Prindle says.

Train Vizsla Puppies Gently

Vizsla puppiesAs we have said before the Vizsla dogs are an excellent breed to own for family's as well as hunting dogs but it is important to keep in mind that Vizsla puppies must be trained gently.

Concerning Vizsla puppies and training keep in mind that they respond best to gentleness with no harsh commands or strong physical correction as Vizsla puppies have sensitive tempermants and might be too easily damaged if training is too harsh.

Get Vizsla puppies near water fairly early as they love it and will show off their swimming skills for fetching and hunting later.

All this hard work will soon pay off as your Vizsla puppy will grow into the best pet you could ever want!
